Delaware and Chester Counties, PA—Another two-goal performance by Henry Gjergo sparked a Phantoms' rally, but time ran out on the comeback attempt, as the Delaware County Community College men's soccer team fell to visiting Salem Community College, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon.
Scoring the first three goals of the contest, the Mighty Oaks (6-3) looked like they would coast to an easy victory, but DCCC (3-5) had other plans, as it responded with back-to-back goals by Gjergo, to move within one, with just under 10 minutes to go until intermission.
A successful Salem penalty kick, in the final minute of first-half play, restored the Mighty Oaks' two-goal lead at the break. Yet, Mirvan Dinler showed that the Phantoms would not go away easily, as he scored his second of the season, just under 12 minutes into the final stanza. Salem would not allow DCCC to get any closer, however, as the visitors held on for the narrow win.
Tallying seven shots on goal on the afternoon, Gjergo continues to pace the Phantoms' offense, as the team leader in goals now has eight on the campaign. Gjergo currently ranks third nationally among all National Junior College Athletic Association players with 66 total shots on the season.
Anthony Dueh added a helper on one of Gjergo's goals for his first collegiate point.
Jonathan Deutsch made the start in net for the hosts, and registered four saves before giving way to Victor Bussab.
DCCC gets right back into action on Thursday when it hosts Northampton Community College at 3:30 p.m.
