Toms River, N.J.—The Delaware County Community College men's soccer team gave Ocean County College all it could handle Saturday afternoon in a hard-fought double-overtime battle, but the host Vikings escaped with a 2-1 victory.
John Lenart provided the offense for the Phantoms (2-3) as his successful penalty kick at the 30-minute mark of the contest staked the visitors to the 1-0 lead.
The Vikings (6-1) responded with an unassisted tally five minutes into second-half play, before the two squads proceeded to engage in almost 60 minutes of scoreless action.
Tallying five shots on goal, Henry Gjergo was active on offense throughout the game for the Phantoms and came close to lifting DCCC to victory in the closing minutes of the second overtime. It was Ocean's Aniello Lubrano, however, that came up with the game winner, in the 108th minute of play, to allow the hosts to dodge the upset.
Making his first collegiate start, Jonathan Deutsch registered six saves in the net for the Phantoms.
A busy stretch awaits for DCCC as it hosts Manor College on Tuesday at 3:30 in the first of three scheduled contests for the Phantoms this week.
