Season Preview: Baseball Aims to Build Foundation for Future Success
Delaware and Chester Counties, PA—There will be plenty of new faces when the Delaware County Community College baseball team takes the field this season.
Playing an abbreviated schedule in 2021, and having the 2020 campaign disrupted by the pandemic, the program looks to move forward with a roster that includes just one sophomore.
Lots of new faces can present a challenge for any coaching staff, but it also spells opportunity.
"This will be one of our toughest years," head coach Kahreem Cunningham said, citing all the new faces. "Yet, also could be the most rewarding."
"As a coach you couldn't ask for a more dedicated, selfless team," continued Cunningham.
Now in his fourth year in charge of the program, Cunningham is expecting big things from Wayne Stewart. "Wayne's leadership is important as our only returning player. He will have a big year pitching as our Number One starter."
Cunningham also mentions Cidrick Navas, Jonathan Martinez, and Anthony Georgette as players to watch.
"I am expecting a big year from Cidrick behind the plate. Jonathan will be a major factor at shortstop and pitcher, and Anthony is going to have a big impact at second base," Cunningham added.
Perhaps the biggest addition for the Phantoms might be in the dugout as Cunningham is thrilled to welcome the leadership of new assistant coach Chip Chapman to the program.
"We are a very young team that will get better as the season progresses," Cunningham said. "The energy and spirit have been great, and the guys have shown wonderful teamwork."
DCCC is looking forward to the opportunity to showcase that teamwork and skill on the field as they hope to lay the foundation for the program's future success.
The Phantoms begin their season with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2, at Montgomery County Community College beginning at noon.
